Yet another year - IDEA 2013 is approaching

Seems like yesterday that me and Yoshi flew over to Melbourne for IDEA Awards 2012 Jury days, suddenly we are already presenting for IDEA Awards 2013.
This year the Jury presentation took place in Sydney, and the award ceremony will take place in Melbourne later this year.

I presented Blu Creativity, shortlisted under Retail category.

Blu Creativity - a resort escape in the middle of the city

at the presentation venue... this is Room 1 where I presented, with more public viewing

This is Room 2, where other categories are presenting at the same time.  I am not sure which room I would prefer ... to have more people looking or to be up close with the jury panel...

So it took me a while to realise that we do have access to some professional photos taken of us as winners of IDEA 2012 - Emerging Designer and International Project Category.

(More about the Award in the previous blog entry HERE)

I believe it is ok to still feel excited about our hard-earned awards - in fact I will keep on being excited for a while!

Emerging Facet Studio!

Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2012 has revealed the winners - Facet Studio has been crowned twice under International Project category and Emerging Designer!

Me and Yoshi on stage receiving the Emerging Designer Award

Over a range of high profile projects of all different types in the inaugural International Project category, M House has won high praises from the jury for the simple beauty and persistence in bringing the idea to life.

Here is what the Jury had to say about the International category:

On top of gaining recognition for our projects, we have also brought home with us the Emerging Designer award:

Leading up to the event we have been so immersed in the actual event design itself (which will be covered in a separate entry) that we were totally unprepared for a speech...but I think we did much better than last year, shows that practice (last year at IDEA 2011, Melbourne and earlier this year at Frame Moooi Award, Milan) does make things better - please note the improvement in our facial expressions!

The Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is Australia’s largest and most successful independent design awards program. Launched by (Inside) magazine in 2003, the program celebrates the best of Australian interior and product design across 11 categories and five special awards.

Frame Moooi Award Gala Party at Milan

Following on from the earlier entry, me and Yoshi took the opportunity to visit Milan and joined the Frame Moooi Award Gala Party.
Another reason is to visit the annual Milan Salone, which I will cover in tomorrow's entry.

So the Gala Party took place at Milan's entertainment venue, Magazzini Generali (which apparently is one of the most famous night club at Milan. On our way there the taxi driver asked us if we were good dancers..).

Hello Philippe Starck!

The Frame Moooi Award has announced the 10 shortlisted projects, amongst 891 submissions over 79 countries - and Facet Studio is in the top 10!!

www.frameweb.com

Here is a description of the award from the designboom website:
the FRAME moooi award 2012 is hosted by dutch furniture company moooi in collaboration with FRAME magazine. it's the year’s biggest inaugural interior design award and will be concluded in milan during april’s salone del mobile fair.
the award celebrates the 10 years of production and exhibition activities of renowned design brand moooi. designboom has been the exclusive online media partner and a whopping 891 submissions were received by designers in 79 countries. ... participants were responding to the brief which asked designers and architects to submit interior space design along with furniture and lighting objects that were CUSTOM-developed in a worldwide context.
the contest has been judged by french designer philippe starck, he selected the shortlist with an anonymous approach, in that he didn’t know the designers’ names or countries of origins. ‘I’m often invited to judge competitions,’ he says. ‘I’m happy to say that the level of this one is clearly higher than average, a very nice surprise.’ the designs and their creators will be featured in the may/june issue of FRAME magazine.
Facet Studio custom designed "Shoe Box" for the project Sneakerology.
The 'Shoe box" is made of plywood and resin, each has its own dedicated light source to individually illuminate the displayed item.
The plywood wall of the box houses all the electrical wiring and structural fixing, which enables the "Shoe boxes' to be stacked together and to be structurally strong enough to resist people pushing against the stacked "Shoe Box" wall when it is used as partition screen or shop facade.

Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) Gala Party

Further from the last post on IDEA Awards, here is a bit more detail on the Gala Party.

Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) promotes and rewards recent work in interior design and product design in Australia.  This year has been the biggest yet with over 400 submissions across all categories.
It is one of the most noted annual award program in Australia.  The award ceremony took place at Ivy Sydney last year (2010), and ACCA Melbourne this year (2011).  Names of the winners were kept secrete until announcement at the Gala Party, although the shortlisted submissions were published in (inside) Magazine since August.  We flew down to Melbourne with two shortlists - Emerging Designer and Retail Design: Sneakerology/ Streetology - and were excited to be awarded Winner for the Retail Category!

People attending the Gala Party have all dressed up beautifully for the event, and arrived early for a glass of champaign before the actual ceremony.  I think we were the only Asians attending.

There were all these "mannequins" standing on poles while we entered the theatre for Award Ceremony..... then they started spinning as if there was no such thing as gravity! (ok by then I realised they were real people...) Not sure about the theme of this performance, but hey, it did a great job in hyping up the atmosphere!

The ticket was $145 per head, and was completely sold out with approximately 500 people attending.  It was quite spectacular.

When the ceremony reached the peak, it was announced: "Winner for Retail Category is.....Sneakerology/ Streetology by Facet Studio!!"
We were so excited, shook hands with people sat around us and headed towards the stage... which was quite far from where we sat..... and I had to noticed that Yoshi was too excited and forgot to put down the beer bottle he was holding the entire time..... which followed us up the stage, went to photoshoot for the Winners behind the stage (the photo on the top) and back to our seat.
I think we were too nervous that Yoshi had forgotten how to smile and luckily I barely remembered...

Although the trophy is physically quite light, to us, it is as heavy as gold.

Facet Studio has won the IDEA Awards 2011 - Retail category!

The winners of Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2011 were announced on November 25 at the IDEA Gala Party at ACCA in Melbourne.
We decided to attend last minute, flew down to Melbourne from Sydney at 6:45am..... very exhausted by the end of the night.  Well, turns out it was all worth it!

It was an interesting experience, and I will try to cover more on the event in the following blog entries.

Announcement on Australian Design Review website

The trophy..  it says "Retail WINNER Sneakerology/ Streetology by Facet Studio"

Whilst I am still waiting on some photos from the Award organisers, feel free to check out the web coverage here:

IDEA Awards official website
Australian Design Review

Here is a little on IDEA Awards extracted from the Awards official website:
The Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) showcase the best of Australian design. The prestigious awards program receives hundreds of submissions from across Australia each year and is recognised by the design community as the country’s pre-eminent design awards program.
...

This year was our biggest yet, with over 400 submissions across all 14 categories.

We are very excited and honoured to have been recognised amongst all the great projects, and a big "thank you!" to everyone who has made this project possible.  We will continue to deliver projects of high quality, and contribute to the architectural profession.

Water Moon awarded!

clink clink* Small announcement...

Water Moon Japanese Restaurant has won the Commercial Interior Category of the inaugural 2010 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards!

view of central lightbox and bar. Central bar is constructed of stacked plywood. Plywood wall panels enclose the space softly with hidden light source, allowing the central lightbox to project from within, colourful backlit shadows of sake bottles, illuminating the dark space

The judging panel said:
The interior of Water Moon restaurant is a celebration of the beauty of timber in its purest geometric form. An intuitive piece of design, the jury applauded the enchanting use of timber to recreate Japanese culture humbly and beautifully.

A timber light box in the core of the restaurant provides a canvas for the inviting colour and shapes of the sake bottles, while creating what the judges called "a subtle manifestation of a bento box". Timber sliding doors and panelling in hoop pine plywood complete the picture with a clever alternative to traditional paper screens.
